1. 分词(built / fixed / sewn…) 2. 介词短语(with the frame / without the need for stitching / on the sea's surface…) 3. 从句(that / which / who…)
Warships were built to be lightweight and very speedy. They had to be able to sail near the coast, which is why they had no ballast or excess load and were built with a long, narrow hull. They did not sink when damaged and often would lie crippled on the sea's surface following naval battles. They had a bronze battering ram, which was used to pierce the timber hulls or break the oars of enemy vessels. Warships used both wind (sails) and human power (oarsmen) and were therefore very fast. Eventually, Rome's navy became the largest and most powerful in the Mediterranean, and the Romans had control over what they therefore called Mare Nostrum meaning 'our sea'.
- 造得轻、快(to be speedy / lightweight)
- 被打坏也不沉 → lie crippled on the sea's surface(following = after)
- 有撞角(ram)→ 可以 pierce(刺穿)或 break(打断)敌人的桨
- 古人用音乐打节拍让几百个桨手同时划(move their oars in and out of water at the same time);
- 阅读里读到的机制(coordinate / assign / at the same time),能换到生活场景里说 = 真的读懂了。
题目:Roman shipbuilding and navigation(Passage 1,题 1–5)
- 2 题 "Skilled craftsmen were needed for the mortise and tenon method of fixing planks." → FALSE(原文:mortise and tenon 是板子互相锁住,无需缝合/无需手艺缝合)
- 3 题 "The later practice involved building the hull before the frame." → FALSE(后来是先 frame 后 hull,顺序反了)
|---|---|---|
| 6 | lightweight | Warships were designed so that they were 6 + moved quickly |
| 7 | bronze | A battering ram made of 7(bronze,原文 bronze battering ram) |
| 8 | levels | rowers on three different 8(top/middle/lower levels) |
| 9 | hull | merchant ships had a broad 9(深水下的宽 hull) |
| 10 | triangular | both square and 10 sails(a small triangular sail at the bow) |
| 11 | music | 11 was used to ensure rowers kept time |
| 12 | grain | agricultural goods such as 12(grain from Egypt's Nile valley) |
| 13 | towboats | ships were pulled to the shore by 13 |
- 造船法演变:sewn(缝合)→ mortise and tenon(榫卯锁板,6 世纪 BC 起)→ 先框架后船壳(frame first, then hull)
- outrigger-free 词汇:ballast(压舱物)、hull(船体)、oar(桨)、pierce(刺穿)、rigging(索具)、excavated vessels(出土船只)
